This was a project for my Research Studio class in SAIC. We were supposed to take public transportation to one of seven or eight designated areas given by our teacher. Once we were there we would go on a Derive and collect random information about the area, it's people, it's living, so on and so forth. I, however, misread the instructions/forgot the station I was supposed to get off at, and so an Hour and a Half later I ended up at the Airport not knowing what to do. I looked at the clock and realized I had to get right on the next train if I wanted to be back in time for my next class, so on it I got. I was afraid that I blew the project, but then I thought of doing my Derive on the subway train. It wasn't a designated area, but it was all I had and I figured a project that bends the rules it better than none at all. I took over 300 pictures (I took pictures of EVERYTHING) and used that information to create this painting. I tried to capture the motion and speed of the subway, the different views you see out the windows, the people who got on and off (They were based on real people), and the culture and the overall feel of the experience based on my "rules for randomness" in the photo taking. I couldn't include everything, but I think I got a nice mix, and my professor was happy with it and my classmates were interested in it, so, yeah, lol.
20" x 26" Mixed Media (Acrylic, Gesso, Modeling Paste, Charcoal, Conte Crayon, Sharpie, Crayola Crayon, pencil, etc) on Canvas
Wicked! and well done - no feedback really other than it really dragged my eye in at first thining it was an art studio mess. Until I enlarged the picture ofcourse. I love how you captured your experience on the subway! Truly arty!
Just lovin' the energy in this painting. There is so much to look at! Great job at filling the composition and using mark making that makes the visual exciting.
I hope you don't mind I featured your work in my latest journal. [link] Thanks!

Across the globe, 27 million men, women, and children live in some form of slavery. That is more people at this moment than in all the centuries of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Something must be done. This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
